Erdogan: Death Penalty Should Exist for Setting Forests on Fire

This was stated by the country's president in Marmaris, where efforts are underway for the third day to combat a natural fire covering an area of 3000 hectares.

“If the punishment needs to be deterrent, then there should be the death penalty for setting forests on fire. This issue should be discussed,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told representatives of the media. The broadcast of his speech was conducted by the TGRT television channel.

The fire in the Marmaris region broke out on Tuesday evening. Today, the Turkish president stated that it has been largely brought under control. Turkish authorities announced yesterday the arrest of a suspect in connection with the arson. During the interrogation, the man confessed to his act and was arrested today.
