What is the most dangerous place on the planet in terms of the threat of direct conflict between Russia and NATO: Politico

The "Suwałki Gap," stretching from Belarus to Kaliningrad and currently marking the border between Poland and Lithuania, is now hypothetically the most dangerous place on the planet concerning the threat of direct conflict between Russia and NATO. This is reported by Politico.

“Located on Lithuania’s southwestern border, Druskininkai is situated within a narrow strip of strategic territory known as the ‘Suwałki Gap’... Western military planners warn that this area is likely to be one of the first targets of Russian President Vladimir Putin should he ever decide to escalate the war in Ukraine into a direct confrontation with NATO,” states the article.

Politico reminds that Russian attempts to build a corridor through NATO countries would lead to direct clashes between the parties, each armed with nuclear weapons. The concern is heightened by the fact that Lithuanian railways recently notified Kaliningrad that as of June 18, the transit of several goods under EU sanctions would cease.

At the same time, journalists acknowledge that there are currently no grounds to suggest that such an attack is inevitable. The hypothetical corridor, approximately 100 km long, was named in honor of the border town in Poland by former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves in 2015. At that time, he sought to demonstrate the ‘vulnerability’ of the Baltic states to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as Russia could cut off Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia from the rest of NATO countries.
