Brazilian-Represented Russian Spy Discovered in the Netherlands
On June 16, the Netherlands intelligence service announced that it has uncovered a Russian military agent who allegedly tried to use a false identity to infiltrate the International Criminal Court, reports RTVI.
"This was a long-term, multi-year operation by the CIA, which cost a lot of time, energy, and money," said Erik Akkermans, head of Dutch intelligence.
According to Akkermans, a certain Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov had created a fabricated persona for years, attempting to enter the Netherlands as a Brazilian citizen for an internship at the ICC in The Hague in April.
"This clearly shows us what the Russians are doing: they are trying to gain illegal access to information available at the ICC. We classify this as a high-level threat," he added.
In an official statement, the Netherlands' General Intelligence and Security Service indicated that the man was classified as a national security threat. The Immigration and Naturalization Service was informed, and based on this, he was banned from entering the Netherlands in April and declared an undesirable foreigner.
