Armenian-American Nobel Laureate Artem Patapoutian Elected as Honorary Member of National Academy of Sciences of Armenia
On June 9, the general assembly of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia decided to elect notable Armenian-American scientist, Nobel Laureate, molecular biologist, and neurobiologist Professor Artem Patapoutian as an honorary member. This was reported by the Science Dissemination and Public Relations Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.
Professor Patapoutian has made significant contributions to the fields of molecular biology and neurophysiology. In 2021, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries regarding receptors for temperature and touch.
Artem Patapoutian was born in 1967 in Beirut. He moved to the United States in 1986. In 1990, he received his bachelor’s degree in the field of Cell and Developmental Biology from the University of California, and in 1996, he defended his doctoral thesis in biology at the California Institute of Technology. In 2000, he became a professor at the Scripps Research Institute. From 2000 to 2014, he worked as a researcher at the Novartis Research Foundation, and since 2014, he has been with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Currently, Professor Patapoutian leads the Patapoutian Lab at the Scripps research institute.
