Under What Conditions Will the Vatican Act as Mediator Between Ukraine and Russia

The Vatican could become a mediator in the negotiations for halting the war between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. However, this can only occur under one condition, stated Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Secretary for Relations with States at the Vatican. The Vatican diplomat made this announcement during a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

On May 20, Gallagher and Kuleba met in Kyiv, as reported by unian.net. Gallagher has expressed his readiness to facilitate peaceful negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. However, for this to happen, the Vatican must receive invitations from both countries.

“Any mediating activity requires an invitation from both sides. If the Holy See receives an invitation from Ukraine and Russia, it will do everything possible to assist the negotiation process…” Gallagher emphasized.
