G7 to Create 'Grain' Alliance to Address Food Supply Issues Arising from Russia-Ukraine Conflict

G7 representatives will form a 'grain' alliance to prevent food supply problems and address the blockade of Ukrainian ports by Russia, reports Der Spiegel, citing sources.

Africa and Middle Eastern countries are threatened by famine as they rely on cheap grain exports from Ukraine, the publication notes.

The initiative for creating the alliance comes from Germany's Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Svenja Schulze, and World Bank President David Malpass.

According to the publication, Russia is obstructing wheat shipments from Ukrainian ports, making it impossible to pass through the borders. The situation is exacerbated by India's ban on wheat exports. Grain prices have risen to record highs.

Currently, Ukraine holds 12 million tons of food, grains, and sunflower oil. These shipments are essential for both the Ukrainian economy and for preventing famine in Africa and the Middle East.
