Why the U.S. Supports the Current Government of Armenia: Suren Sargsyan
Political scientist Suren Sargsyan, who is well-versed in the relations between Armenia and the U.S. and their history, writes:
“I am often asked why the U.S. supports the Armenian authorities.” He noted the following on his Facebook page:
“1. The number one priority of American geopolitics in our region is to either completely push Russia out of the region or at least to effectively counter its influence. The policy of counteraction, of course, relates to all those regions where these superpowers are competing; in other words, all over the world.
2. Naturally, the U.S. cannot form a counterbalance to Russia in our region through Iran and has only one ally in this matter: Turkey. The U.S. has a bad ally, nonetheless. A bad ally is better than an enemy.
3. For the first time in history, there is a government in Armenia that is ready to create (or has already created) an environment based on unilateral and global concessions that will allow Turkey, by penetrating Armenia, to enhance its role across the entire South Caucasus (let us not forget Turkey’s influence in Georgia and Azerbaijan) and create a real counterbalance to Russia. This is why the U.S. has been supporting Armenian-Turkish reconciliation since 1992. This means that the agenda coincides more than ever before.
This is not the only reason for the U.S. support of the Armenian government, but this example is applicable in other directions as well, considering the thesis stated in point 1.”
Let us recall that yesterday Ambassador Lynne Tracy stated in an interview with Armenpress: “We are committed to helping the Armenian people build a future based on common democratic values and the path that the Armenian people chose in 2018 and reaffirmed once again in the 2021 parliamentary elections.”
