VIDEO: Footage of Police Violence. Tovmasyan Sends Urgent Letter to Prosecutor's Office
Chairperson of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Human Rights Protection and Public Affairs, Taguhi Tovmasyan, wrote on her Facebook page:
"I have received an alarm that today, at 07:15, individuals who disguised themselves as police officers, without insignia and in some unclear uniforms, fraudulently entered the apartment of the president of the Republican Party's youth organization, Henrikh Danielyan, under the pretext of conducting a search and took him to the Kumayri division of the Armenian police, where he was interrogated and subsequently released.
A few days ago, 'Resistance' movement participant Davit Avagyan was arrested and later detained on the grounds that he does not have a permanent residence in Armenia, when in fact, Davit Avagyan is from Hadrout and lost his home as a result of the war, moving to Yerevan. He had also indicated that he is the guardian of three minor sons. However, the police, disregarding this circumstance, arrested him and then altered the content of the report at the precinct, attributing alleged hooliganism to Davit Avagyan.
This means that to punish political dissent, the authorities are willing to resort to any unlawful actions — even detaining a compatriot who lost his home as a result of the war and justifying it by stating that he does not have a permanent residence in Armenia.
In relation to these incidents, I have sent an urgent letter to the Chief Prosecutor Arthur Davtyan and requested his directive to clarify the circle of police employees who may have committed legal violations, simultaneously assessing the legality of their actions and considering the issue of providing a legal assessment corresponding to their acts, as well as providing information on the progress and results of the investigation."
