Statements Regarding Corridors Are Unacceptable, Says Iranian Ambassador in Armenia
On April 29, Syunik Region Governor Robert Ghukasyan met with the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Armenia, Abbas Badakhshan Zohouri, according to the Syunik Regional Administration. The meeting was also attended by Kapan community leader Gevorg Parsiann and the head of the Syunik Regional Police Alexander Mamikonyan.
The main topic discussed at the meeting was the opening of an Iranian consulate in Kapan and the work to deepen and strengthen cooperation between Syunik and the Islamic Republic of Iran in various sectors.
Governor Robert Ghukasyan expressed gratitude to the diplomat for his visit, emphasizing that relations with Iran are very important for the Republic of Armenia, and especially for Syunik. He stated that the regional authorities are ready to do everything possible to make bilateral relations more effective.
Ambassador Zohouri congratulated the governor on his appointment, noting that despite the strong cultural ties, economic relations between the two countries are not at the desired level, and efforts need to be made in that direction. He also thanked for the assistance provided to their citizens who faced difficulties in the interstate highway rendered impassable by heavy rains in March this year.
Emphasizing a few political points, the ambassador reminded that Iran supports the inviolability of Armenia's internationally recognized borders and stated that all countries should respect this: 'Expressions regarding corridors concerning communication routes are unacceptable to us; we believe that Armenia must maintain its territorial integrity.'
The Syunik governor and the Kapan community leader thanked the ambassador for Iran's official stance on the 'corridor' issue. 'Your opinion is crucial and appreciated by every resident of Syunik,' said Robert Ghukasyan.
The Iranian side had agreed to open a consulate in Kapan nine months ago, and Abbas Badakhshan Zohouri noted that the goal of establishing a diplomatic representation in Syunik is to develop relations in all sectors.
The ambassador also introduced the consul present at the meeting, adding that they would soon present the composition of the consulate to the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Iranian side spoke about their interest in the segment of the 'North-South' road that passes through Syunik and informed that there are Iranian companies ready to participate in its construction.
The parties discussed several areas of new-level cooperation expected after the opening of the consulate, addressing economic, educational, cultural, and other issues. Gevorg Parsiann announced that Persian language classes would begin at a community educational institution starting in September.
The possibility of establishing sister city relationships between the regional center and any Iranian city was also addressed. At the end of the visit, the Iranian guests examined sites for the future consulate building in Kapan.
