Video: Makunts Invited Police to Congress to Remove Armenians; Details Revealed
In the US, Armenian Ambassador to the US Lilit Makunts called the police during an event organized in Congress to commemorate the Armenian Genocide, targeting American-Armenian youths in attendance. Tert.am spoke with one of the youths who provided details about the incident.
“An annual event dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide was held at the Capitol, in which we also participated. The event was attended by congressmen, high-ranking officials, and staff from the Armenian Embassy, led by Lilit Makunts. At the end of the event, when everyone was already leaving, embassy staff, acting on Makunts' instructions, immediately called the police to remove us from there. We were not there to organize any action, first and foremost out of respect for the significance of April 24. The embassy staff made some unfounded accusations against us, and at first, we did not understand what was happening. The police held us in place for about two hours, did not allow us to go home, interrogated us, and checked our documents. Seeing that there was nothing illegal, they released us and told embassy staff that we had the right to be there and they simply could not remove us,” said one of the American-Armenian youths.
He noted that Lilit Makunts likely recognized them from previous actions organized in front of the embassy. “We have previously protested in front of the embassy when Makunts organized an event dedicated to the 44-day war, where we demanded action toward the release of Armenian prisoners. This is not the first time Lilit Makunts has called police on us. She probably thinks she can call in red berets like in Armenia and remove us from the area, but here we all know our rights; they cannot just remove us,” said one of the American-Armenian youths.
It should be recalled that earlier today, reports emerged that Lilit Makunts requested that US police arrest American-Armenian youths who were participating in the commemoration of the holy martyrs of the Armenian Genocide at the US Congress.
