VIDEO: An Officer Arrested, NSS Reveals New Case of State Betrayal

The National Security Service (NSS) of the Republic of Armenia has reported that substantial operational and investigative measures have revealed that a citizen of Armenia, who served as a military officer, had been recruited by foreign intelligence services.

The individual provided written consent for this recruitment and received a corresponding codename, committing to gather and transfer classified state and service-related information to the foreign services. In return, he handed over sensitive data regarding military personnel who graduated from military academies abroad, commanders of a specific military unit, key personnel from the artillery department, and vital data of officers who participated in an 'expo-military' exhibition for a total compensation of $1,400.

Additionally, he disclosed the unit's personnel list from his military division, the quantity of missile systems present in the unit, details about military equipment losses during the 44-day war that began on September 27, locations of artillery strikes, training areas, and information about the commanding officers involved in these exercises.

Furthermore, during the 44-day war, while serving as deputy commander of a missile system battery, this military officer did not carry out significant combat operations and failed to take measures to conceal missile launchers, which led to the equipment being targeted and destroyed by the enemy, resulting in irretrievable loss of military assets.

It was also discovered that after the war, this officer continued to cooperate with representatives of foreign intelligence services, providing information regarding the quantity and types of imported weapons and military equipment in exchange for rewards.

Moreover, it was established that this officer, holding a security clearance, collected combat maps with secret stamps from his unit intending to transfer them for a reward of $8,000. However, he was caught by the NSS before he could complete this unlawful act.

On April 20, 2022, this officer was arrested based on reasonable suspicion of state betrayal and has since provided confessional testimonies.

The NSS of Armenia continues to employ all necessary measures to prevent and suppress such crimes that undermine the foundations of the state, assuring that it fully understands the operational situation and that anyone associated with espionage activities will be identified and subjected to penalties or other legal actions.

Note: The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the procedure established by the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia and a final court ruling.
