Hungary Accepts Ruble Payment Scheme for Russian Gas and Oil, Says Foreign Minister

The Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, has confirmed to CNN that his country will adopt the payment scheme for Russian oil and gas mandated by Russia, according to Interfax.

The diplomat explained, “85% of our gas and 65% of our oil comes from Russia. Why is that? Because it is determined by infrastructure. This is not for entertainment; we did not choose this situation.”

Szijjarto added that Hungary has no alternative sources or routes that would allow it to stop importing Russian energy in the coming years.

The television channel reminds that several other countries have also agreed to the Moscow payment scheme. Last week, a document published by the European Commission indicated that it “seems possible” to maintain the new Russian rules without contradicting EU legislation.
