Italian Eni Ready to Open Accounts in Rubles with Gazprombank: Bloomberg
Italian energy company Eni SpA has expressed its willingness to open accounts in rubles with Gazprombank as part of Russia's demand to pay for gas in local currency. This information was reported by RT, referencing Bloomberg.
The media outlet cited sources familiar with the situation. It was noted that the move is precautionary; the company has decided to consult with the Italian government and European authorities about whether the accounts can be used to purchase Russian gas and under what conditions.
An Eni representative declined to comment on the matter.
On April 27, Bloomberg reported that four European buyers of Russian gas had already paid Gazprom in rubles, and ten European companies have opened accounts with Gazprombank to make payments under the new procedure.
Additionally, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer stated that Vienna has accepted the new conditions for paying for Russian gas.
