New Prime Minister Elected in Pakistan

Shahbaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League, has been elected as the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan. According to TASS, the voting took place in the country’s National Assembly (the lower house of Parliament) and was broadcasted on local television channels. Sharif received 174 votes.

Earlier, the Pakistan National Assembly had voted in favor of a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Reports indicate that Shahbaz Sharif is the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Consequently, Pakistan's foreign policy might become more Saudi-friendly and more anti-Iranian.

Additionally, the Pakistan Muslim League follows a more moderate approach towards the United States, devoid of the radicalism characteristic of Imran Khan's tenure.
