Italy Ready to Assume Role of Security Guarantor for Ukraine, Says Foreign Minister
Italy is prepared to act as a guarantor of Ukraine's security and considers the involvement of international mediators necessary in negotiations for a peaceful resolution. This was stated by Italy's Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio in an interview published on April 8 in the Messaggero newspaper, as reported by Armenpress.
“Italy is ready to assume the role of a guarantor; we support the negotiation process, believing in Turkey's role within it. It is not enough for only the two sides to be at the negotiating table; it is necessary to bring in other international players,” said Di Maio.
According to him, Italy is working on organizing a peace conference that could contribute to resolving the conflict. Earlier, the Ukrainian side stated that Kyiv is willing to stipulate its neutral and demilitarized status if security guarantees are provided that are similar in content and form to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
Potential guarantors, as considered in Kyiv, could include permanent members of the UN Security Council (including Russia), as well as Germany, Israel, Italy, Canada, Poland, and Turkey. Moscow has stated that security guarantees should be provided not only to Russia but also to Ukraine and all European countries, TASS reported.
