UN to Discuss Removing Russia from Human Rights Council Due to War Crimes in Bucha
Today, the UN General Assembly will vote on the question of removing Russia from the Human Rights Council due to alleged mass war crimes in Ukraine.
Russia has been a member of the UN Human Rights Council for two years. The overall term for members of the Council, which operates in Geneva, is three years.
The U.S. permanent representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has called for Russia's removal from the Council after Ukraine accused Russian forces of murdering dozens of civilians in the city of Bucha.
The General Assembly, comprised of 193 member states, can suspend the membership of any country in the Council by a two-thirds majority vote if it systematically and grossly violates human rights.
