Local Government Elections Today in Vedi Consolidated Community
Local government elections are taking place today, March 27, in the Vedi consolidated community. Two parties are participating in the elections: the ruling "Civil Contract" and the "My Strong Community" parties.
The list of candidates from the "Civil Contract" party is composed of 81 candidates, led by Garik Sargsyan, the acting head of the Vedi community and a member of the party. Among the council candidates, only 21 are independents; the rest are affiliated with the Civil Contract party.
The second candidate on the Civil Contract list is Aramais Grigoryan, the director of the Vedi Medical Center, while the third is Gohar Ghazaryan, the director of the New Life community kindergarten. There are also school directors on the list, including Kristine Tunyana, the director of the New Way Secondary School, and Vahram Manukyan, the director of School No. 1 named after Zhoras Mkrtchyan in Ararat.
The candidates also include educators and healthcare workers.
The "My Strong Community" party's list includes 80 candidates, led by Spartak Tartikyans, a representative of the party. Of the council candidates, 65 are from "My Strong Community"; 2 represent the Republican Party (RPA), 1 the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF), and the remaining 11 are independents.
While the "My Strong Community" party has no school directors on its list, it does include teachers and individual entrepreneurs.
The number of eligible voters in Vedi is 37,198. The council of the consolidated community is to be composed of 27 members.
It is worth noting that local elections were held in Vedi on December 5, 2021, where 8,666 people voted for "My Strong Community", 7,690 for the Civil Contract, and 3,299 for the "Republic" party. No political force was able to overcome the 50+1% threshold, meaning none could independently elect a mayor without forming a coalition. A coalition was not formed, and on December 16, members of the "Republic" and "Civil Contract" factions of the council expressed self-withdrawal and resigned from their mandates, which led to the announcement of new elections.
However, the "Republic" party decided not to participate in the new elections.
