When Europe Will No Longer Depend on Russian Gas

Following the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, Germany has made significant progress in reducing its dependence on imports of Russian gas, oil, and coal. This was stated by Economy Minister Robert Habeck.

According to Reuters, he noted that Russian oil imports currently account for 25 percent of German imports, down from 35 percent prior to the escalation, while gas imports have decreased from 55 percent to 40 percent. The import of Russian coal has dropped from 50 percent to 25 percent.

By the summer of this year, the share of Russian gas imports is expected to decrease to 24 percent, but the minister indicated that by the summer of 2024, the largest economy in Europe will no longer be dependent on Russian gas.

Habeck emphasized that achieving this goal will require tremendous efforts from the government, municipalities, companies, and consumers. He stated that utility companies will make every effort to overcome decades of dependence on Russian pipelines.
