Under What Conditions Will the EU Ease Sanctions Against Russia?

The official representative of the EU External Action Service, Peter Stano, stated that the easing of anti-Russian sanctions is possible if hostilities in Ukraine cease and Russian troops are withdrawn, as reported by РИА Новости.

At the same time, he noted that the EU imposes sanctions in response to actions that “change behavior” or violate international or humanitarian law, and as long as the EU does not consider that these violations have been addressed, the restrictions will remain in place. According to him, decisions on the extension and adjustment of sanctions lists are made unanimously by EU member states.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to conduct a military special operation for the defense of Donbas in response to requests for assistance from the leaders of Luhansk and Donetsk. Ukraine has severed diplomatic relations with Russia. A number of countries, including EU member states, have imposed sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as well as several officials, businessmen, and journalists.
