VIDEO: Adding Salt Without Tasting the Dish, According to the Minister
The Ministry of Health will hold discussions on the use of salt over the course of the next week with representatives from restaurants, advocates for consumer rights, and nutritionists. This was announced by Minister of Health Anahit Avanesyan during a press briefing after a government meeting.
It was previously reported that the Ministry of Health has developed a draft proposal suggesting that salt should not be placed on tables in public dining establishments unless customers request it. The proposal has been widely discussed on social media and has faced criticism.
Avanesyan believes that the controversy surrounding the proposal has created a valuable opportunity for public discussion. “I am glad that citizens are actively discussing this topic. The issue is that we are consuming double the daily recommended amount of salt, which leads to the exacerbation of chronic diseases. We want to implement some changes in citizens’ habits. The discussion revolves around the fact that salt is added without tasting the dish,” she stated.
According to her, everything is beneficial and necessary in moderation. It is worth noting that the new regulation proposes a fine of 30,000 drams for those who violate it. The draft was published on March 2, and a deadline for public discussion has been set for March 17. After that, it will be presented to the government for consideration, and if approved, it will be submitted to the National Assembly.
