Vahagn Khachaturyan Elected Fifth President of the Republic of Armenia
The National Assembly has elected Vahagn Khachaturyan as the President of the Republic of Armenia through a second round of secret ballot.
Seventy-one members participated in the voting. Khachaturyan received votes from all 71 members, with no opposition votes recorded. The National Assembly congratulated the newly elected President Vahagn Khachaturyan with spontaneous applause.
In the first round of voting, Khachaturyan did not succeed; he received backing from 69 members, while 81 votes were necessary for election. The opposition factions 'Hayastan' and 'Pativ Unem' did not participate in the discussion and voting on the presidential election.
Khachaturyan's candidacy was presented by the 'Civil Contract' faction.
It is noteworthy that on January 23, the President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, announced his resignation.
