Armenian Tennis Player Wins Against Turkish and Montenegrin Opponents in Turkey: Mikael Becomes Champion

14-year-old Armenian tennis player Mikael Avanesyan has triumphed at the European Tennis Development Championships held in Antalya, Turkey. This information was reported by the press service of the Armenian Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport.

In the semifinals, the Armenian athlete defeated his Turkish opponent, and in the finals, he won against a Montenegrin athlete with scores of 4-6, 6-2, and 6-1. Representatives from 11 European countries participated in the tournament.

The Executive Director of the Tennis Federation of Armenia, Gevorg Karamanukyan, stated that Avanesyan's achievement is exceptional in the history of Armenian tennis. “Mikael also participated in this tournament last December and secured the second position, which was another unprecedented result. This year, Mikael surpassed himself. He is ranked 7th in Europe in his age group, which is an excellent indicator. We are very pleased that he was able to become the tournament winner as well. Over the past few years, Mikael has traveled a long and difficult path,” said Karamanukyan.

Mikael Avanesyan is from Yerevan and trains in the capital. He is the top-ranked player in Armenia among 14-year-olds. Karamanukyan emphasized that Mikael is on the path to professional tennis, but, of course, junior tennis is different from the professional level, and there are great hopes.

In doubles, Armenian players Mikael Avanesyan and David Poghosyan also secured third place. According to Gevorg Karamanukyan, this is also a significant success.

This year, the Armenian team traveled to the tournament with state funding. In addition to the under-14 national team of Armenia, teams of boys and girls under-12 are also in Turkey, participating in a training camp organized by Tennis Europe.

The tournament in Antalya will conclude on March 7. Today, the second round of the tournament will commence, and Armenian tennis players will also participate. Alongside Mikael Avanesyan and David Poghosyan, Lilith Antonian and Sofi Gidachyan have traveled to the competition. The coach is Vahe Avetisyan. The Armenian under-12 national team is participating in the training camp with 4 athletes—2 boys and 2 girls.
