Which is the Most Polluted Country in the European Union?

The EU Statistical Office has recognized Bulgaria as the most polluted country in the union. This information has been reported on the office's website.

Eurostat has recorded an increase in greenhouse gas emissions associated with the recovery of business activity. Bulgaria has become the leader in this increase, with emissions rising by 22.7% compared to last year. Following Bulgaria are Latvia, with an increase of 16.2%, and Greece, with 13.1%.

Earlier, a new source of greenhouse gases was discovered in Siberia. An international team of scientists from Finland, Russia, and Germany found that when permafrost melts in the organic-rich highlands of Eastern Siberia, a significant amount of highly active greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N2O), is released.

Nitrous oxide is typically produced by bacteria in the soil. Although this gas is not as abundant in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide and methane, it has a much more significant impact on global temperature rise; in this regard, its effect is nearly 300 times greater than that of carbon dioxide.
