Why Hair Falls Out After COVID-19 and What to Do About It

Many people experience hair loss after contracting the COVID-19 coronavirus. What causes this and how can it be addressed? Dermatologist-trichologist Tatyana Egorova from Russia shares her insights.

Hair loss can be triggered by a lack of iron in the body or elevated cortisol levels, as well as the coronavirus infection itself. According to specialists, it is impossible to reverse the hair loss process, and both women and men can be affected.

Egorova points out that COVID-19 disrupts the nourishment of hair follicles and the functioning of blood vessels, leading to hair loss. “The only thing that can be done is to accelerate the hair growth process. Mesotherapy and vitamin therapy are performed,” she said.

She indicated that the treatment of this issue depends on the type of hair loss, with diffuse alopecia being the most common, which may last for 100-120 days. The specialist also added that the virus negatively affects skin health, and to treat it, patients need to restore their water balance and barrier functions, as well as not neglect the care to speed up recovery processes and cell renewal. For these purposes, glutathione, vitamin C, carnosine, and antioxidants are used.
