Citizens of Turkey and Azerbaijan Seek Asylum in Armenia

In 2021, a total of 260 individuals applied to the Migration Service of Armenia for the right to asylum, according to data provided by the Migration Service in response to an inquiry from Armenpress.

The highest number of asylum seekers in 2021 came from Iran, with 118 individuals applying, of which applications for 35 were suspended or terminated, while 42 Iranian citizens were denied asylum. Additionally, 40 Iranians applied for refugee status, with 3 having their status terminated.

Following Iranian citizens, 52 people from Iraq sought asylum in Armenia in 2021, with 4 applications being suspended or terminated, and 9 individuals obtaining refugee status. Last year, 27 Syrian citizens also applied for asylum, with 2 applications suspended or terminated, and 20 receiving refugee status.

A total of 14 citizens from Cuba applied for asylum in Armenia in 2021, with 2 applications suspended or terminated, 7 denied, and 1 obtaining legal status. Additionally, 7 Russian citizens submitted asylum applications, with 1 application suspended or terminated and 4 denied.

In 2021, 6 Turkish citizens sought asylum in Armenia, with 1 application suspended or terminated, 1 denied, and 3 obtaining refugee status. One application from an Azerbaijani citizen was suspended or terminated, and 2 Azerbaijanis were denied asylum.

Throughout the year, citizens from other countries, including China, Ukraine, Jordan, Georgia, and others, also sought asylum.

In summary, among the 260 citizens who applied for asylum in 2021, 69 applications were suspended or denied, 67 individuals received a rejection, and 78 were granted refugee status. The refugee status of 10 individuals was terminated. Notably, the number of asylum seekers in Armenia in 2021 significantly exceeded that of 2020 and 2019.
