Inmate Attempts to Kill Staff Member at Armavir Penitentiary

The Investigative Committee of Armenia's Armavir regional department is conducting investigative and procedural actions to clarify the circumstances surrounding an attempted murder of a staff member by an inmate at the Armavir penitentiary.

According to preliminary information, on February 6, 2022, between 1:00 PM and 1:15 PM, an inmate held in one of the quarantine cells of the Armavir penitentiary requested to be taken out of his cell under the pretext of needing to use a telephone. The staff member agreed to assist him.

Before reaching the telephone, the inmate, with the intention of unlawfully taking the staff member's life, attacked him with a metallic piercing object he had taken with him from the cell, followed by punches to the head, causing bodily harm. Subsequently, he attempted to strangle the worker by squeezing his neck. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, he was unable to complete the crime.

The head investigator of the mentioned penitentiary has initiated a criminal case under the characteristics of Article 34-104, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Armenia, which has been forwarded to the Armavir regional investigative department for further proceedings. The investigation is ongoing.
