Ukrainian NATO Membership Not on Agenda, Says German Government
Countries have the right to freely choose which alliances they wish to join, however, Ukraine's membership in NATO is not on the agenda. This was stated by Steffen Hebestreit, the official representative of the German government.
He commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin's remarks regarding the risks of a possible clash between Russia and NATO over Ukraine.
In response to a question regarding the possibility of Ukraine's NATO membership under a 'French formula', which would suggest political but not military membership, Hebestreit noted that this implies joining the alliance.
“However, as I just quoted, the acceptance of Ukraine into NATO is not on the agenda,” he said.
