Canada Calls on Its Citizens to Leave Ukraine
The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has updated its travel advisories for Canadian citizens, urging them to leave Ukraine and not to travel there due to the risk of armed conflict between the country and Russia, reports Gazeta.ru.
The authorities in Canada have noted that those currently in Ukraine should depart using commercial flights, "as long as they are available." According to them, since November 2021, Russia has been "building up its military presence" at the Russian-Ukrainian border, and the danger has sharply increased.
"Russian military operations in Ukraine could disrupt transportation routes and various services throughout the country. Flights could be suspended or canceled on short notice, leading to delays. Their numbers may also decrease, making it harder to leave the country. Telecommunication access could also be interrupted at any moment," the statement said.
The Ministry emphasized that the "invasion" could affect the functioning of Canadian diplomatic missions and consular services, which means that citizens should not rely on government assistance for leaving the country.
Canadian authorities also provided a set of recommendations for citizens in Ukraine who do not follow their advisories. Specifically, they advised staying updated with the most reliable news sources, reassessing their security, being ready to shelter in a safe location, maintaining contact with family, and registering with the special registry of Canadians abroad.
