Avinyan as Vice Mayor? Interesting Developments in Yerevan City Hall
'Haykakan Zhamanak' newspaper writes: "Interesting processes are unfolding in Yerevan City Hall. It seemed that the newly appointed mayor would simply be a placeholder until the ruling team chooses its preferred candidate through regular or extraordinary elections. In this context, the most likely candidate is former Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan.
However, it became clear that Hrachya Sargsyan does not want to subordinate to Avinyan’s decisions and suggestions, who effectively governs the capital.
Recently, we reported on the ongoing personnel shake-up in the city hall: four deputies have been dismissed, and a fierce struggle is ongoing over who will be appointed next. Many candidates are being discussed. According to the information we have received, Sargsyan is opposing the candidates presented by Avinyan and wants to promote his own people.
Our sources in the city hall indicate that there are more than thirty candidates in the mix. However, conversations have been circulating recently in the city hall that considering the new mayor's whims, it is possible that Avinyan himself may be appointed as vice mayor and take over the city's leadership in order to ensure a smooth and robust preparation for the elections."
