Significant Increase in Omicron Variant Infections Observed in Armenia, Minister Provides Details
There is a sharp increase in infections caused by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in Armenia. This information was presented today by Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan during a government meeting.
“This week we are experiencing a progressive increase. As for hospitalization cases among those infected, it fluctuates around 5-6 percent. That is, only 5-6 percent of those infected require hospitalization, which can be considered the only positive news,” said the minister.
Avanesyan commented that the low number of hospitalization cases is supported by both vaccinations and the characteristics of the variant. According to the Health Minister, the infected citizens mainly experience the Omicron variant asymptomatically or in the form of a cold.
Despite this, the minister assured that the number of hospital beds would be increased in the six hospitals involved in the treatment of coronavirus if necessary. Regarding vaccinations, she reported that, according to official data, 45.3 percent of the population has received the first dose, and 37 percent have received the second dose.
Armenia is well supplied with the necessary number of vaccines. The responsible authorities are only concerned about the low vaccination rate among the elderly population. According to official statistics, only 19 percent of citizens aged 65 and older have been vaccinated.
