Armenia Has a New Chess Champion
The winner of the 82nd Armenian Men's Chess Championship is Grandmaster Manuel Petrosyan. With 8 points out of 11 possible, the 23-year-old Manuel Petrosyan has been crowned Armenia's champion for the first time in his career.
Before the final 11th round of the tournament, Manuel Petrosyan was leading the standings with 7 points. He was followed by Shant Sargsyan and the 2018 Armenian champion Haik Martirosyan, who were half a point behind.
In the 11th round, Manuel Petrosyan played black against Arman Mikayelyan and forced Mikayelyan to resign on the 29th move. As a result of this victory, Manuel Petrosyan became unattainable for his closest competitors, securing the championship title regardless of the outcomes of their games.
Throughout the 82nd Armenian Men's Championship, Manuel Petrosyan had 6 wins, drew 4 games, and suffered only 1 loss. With this title of champion, Manuel Petrosyan will join the Armenian Men's National Team and will have the opportunity to participate in the Chess Olympiad scheduled to be held in Moscow this summer.
It is also worth mentioning that earlier, Mariam Mkrtchyan became the champion in the women's tournament.
