Emergency Incident at One of Armenia's Prisons
On January 21, an emergency incident occurred at one of the prisons under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice of Armenia. Prison staff conducted a search of a lawyer visiting an individual detained for opposing views. During the search, the lawyer emptied their bag and presented a device intended for electronic smoking, contained in a closed box.
During the search, prison staff discovered white, drug-like substances in the corners of the smoking device in the presence of the lawyer. It was also found that the device was not in its factory condition. The lawyer stated on-site that the device had been given to them by a 34-year-old resident of Yerevan, who requested that they pass it on to their client.
In the evening, operatives from the Erebuni division of the police, in cooperation with their colleagues from the prison's operational service, located and detained the citizen who had provided the device near 7 Nubarashen Highway.
During the preparation of materials, it was revealed that the man had transferred 1.93 grams of methamphetamine through the lawyer (the investigation will confirm or deny whether the lawyer was aware of this, as law enforcement has suspicions that they were not informed). A criminal case has been initiated on the matter, and the 34-year-old man has been arrested as a suspect, while the lawyer has been released on signature.
