Protesters Topple Nazarbayev Statue

Protesters have toppled the statue of Nazarbayev. Earlier, we published a video showing how the unruly demonstrators tied the statue with ropes and attempted to pull it down.

It should be noted that unrest in Kazakhstan began on January 4 and continues to this day. On January 2, residents of the cities of Aktau and Zhanauzen took to the streets, demanding a decrease in fuel prices. The price of gas in Kazakhstan doubled on January 1, rising from 60 tenge (10 rubles) to 120 tenge (20 rubles).

Today, protesters stormed the Almaty City Hall and set it on fire. Additionally, they ignited buildings of the prosecutor's office and the ruling party's headquarters. The protesters have seized the presidential residence in Almaty. Clashes are occurring between police and demonstrators in the city center.
