When Did Yerevan Provide Minefield Maps to Baku? Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister Issues Statement
Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mamedov stated that Armenia provided Azerbaijan with all minefield maps three days prior to the publication of the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) decision. He noted that the issue of providing minefield maps was also raised within the framework of the ICJ, and Baku presented the names of citizens who were injured by landmines.
It is worth noting that in September, the Republic of Armenia filed a complaint against Azerbaijan at the International Court of Justice, citing violations of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. In its request, Armenia demanded that Azerbaijan immediately release Armenian prisoners of war, civilian hostages, and other detained persons who were captured during armed clashes in September-November 2020 or thereafter. Until then, Azerbaijan must treat them within the framework of their obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
Azerbaijan is required to refrain from expressions that incite hatred against Armenians on an ethnic basis, including ceasing the so-called “military spoils park” operation. Baku must ensure access to cultural monuments (churches, memorials, etc.) within the areas it controls, as well as take real measures to preserve these monuments.
On September 24, Baku also filed a complaint, claiming that Armenia has conducted and is conducting discriminatory actions against Azerbaijanis based on their national and ethnic origin.
On December 7, the court issued its decision, demanding that Azerbaijan cease inciting racial hatred against Armenians. The international court also urged Armenia to refrain from any actions that could exacerbate the situation.
It should be mentioned that Azerbaijan last transferred 10 Armenian soldiers captured during the clashes on November 16 back to Armenia. However, dozens of prisoners, including those captured on November 16, remain in Azerbaijan.
