Seismic Stability of Buildings in Armenia Remains a Pressing Issue, Says Minister of Emergency Situations
The seismic stability of buildings in Armenia continues to be a pressing issue. This was stated by the Minister of Emergency Situations, Andranik Piloyan, during the scientific-practical conference titled "The Historical Experience of the Spitak Earthquake and Modern Technologies for Seismic Safety" on December 6.
According to the minister, the devastating earthquake of 1988 exposed numerous deficiencies and problems related to the strength of residential buildings and other structures. "Until 1988, buildings in Yerevan and other major cities of the republic were designed according to minimum seismic stability standards. The issue is partially addressed during the construction of modern buildings," Piloyan assured.
The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations noted that new methods for strengthening the seismic stability of buildings are being developed and implemented. "However, aside from the construction component, regular work is being carried out with the population in Armenia and Artsakh, including training and drills related to evacuation. We have quite heavy memories of the events that took place 33 years ago. Therefore, to this day, we share our experiences with the world and adopt global practices," the minister said.
Piloyan described this event as an important platform for analyzing the issue and taking all necessary preventive measures.
