Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison. What Are the Charges?
Myanmar's former State Counselor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate (1991) Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to four years in prison for incitement and violations of Covid restrictions, The Guardian reports, detailing that Aung San Suu Kyi was ousted from power after a military coup in February.
The 76-year-old politician has been accused of several crimes, including violations of the Official Secrets Act. Her lawyer previously described these charges as 'absurd.' Reports indicate that the incitement case centers on a statement made online after the February coup, in which Aung San Suu Kyi urged international organizations not to cooperate with the military junta that seized power.
According to the second charge, she violated coronavirus restrictions during a campaign conducted ahead of last year's elections.
