Poverty Levels in Armenia: "Zhoghovurd"

The poverty level in Armenia was assessed at 27 percent in 2020, which is 0.6 percentage points higher than the previous year’s 26.4 percent. According to the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia, 0.7 percent of the population lives in extreme poverty. The "Zhoghovurd" newspaper reported that last year the depth of poverty was 1.3 percent.

Moreover, it was revealed that the highest rate of child poverty last year was in the Shirak region, reaching 57.7 percent. According to the Statistical Committee of Armenia, high levels were also observed in the Gegharkunik region at 56 percent, Tavush at 46.1 percent, and Aragatsotn at 40.1 percent. A relatively lower level was recorded in the Syunik region at 9.3 percent.

According to official sources cited by "Zhoghovurd", the highest level of extreme poverty was in the Aragatsotn region at 4.2 percent and in Shirak at 3.1 percent. Thus, the quality of life for Armenian citizens has not improved, and, along with this, the living standards of the population are steadily declining. This is according to official reports,” the newspaper writes.
