Our Rivers Continue to Flow into Azerbaijan, Irrigating Enemy Fields and Orchards: Voskanyan Sargsyan

Journalist Voskanyan Sargsyan’s statement: “Voskepar, Koghbaget, Agstev, Karahahan, Hakhoum and other rivers flow into Azerbaijan, irrigating that country’s territories. It is necessary to construct irrigation reservoirs in Tavush and increase the area of irrigable land in the region.

In 2017, at that time the governor of Tavush, Hovik Abovyan announced that there is a plan for the construction of small and medium reservoirs in Tavush. He presented a project for the construction of 14 small and medium reservoirs in Tavush to then-Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan, which would enable the accumulation of up to 10 million cubic meters of water, thereby making 4,000 hectares of land irrigable. The total cost of constructing these reservoirs was estimated at 8 billion 450 million drams.

The governor announced that in the reservoirs to be constructed in Hakhoum and Koghb, it is planned to accumulate 2 million cubic meters of water, and to resolve the issue of financing necessary for the construction of small and medium reservoirs, they intend to also attract private investors.

Then came the so-called velvet revolution in the spring of 2018, and the reservoirs in Koghb and Hakhoum were not built; our rivers continue to flow into Azerbaijan, irrigating the fields and orchards of our not-so-friendly neighbor.”
