Number of People with Disabilities since the War: Batoyan Reveals Figures
As of July 1, there are officially 194,640 people with disabilities registered in Armenia, including 9,039 children. The 44-day war in Artsakh resulted in disabilities for 1,488 individuals. This was reported by Zarouhi Batoyan, a member of the National Assembly from the 'Civil Contract' faction, on her Facebook page.
“December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. As of July 1, a total of 194,640 people with disabilities are registered in Armenia, including 9,039 children. The war resulted in disabilities for 1,488 individuals. On May 5, 2021, the National Assembly adopted the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a commitment that the Government of Armenia assumed in 2010 by ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The new law creates all necessary foundations to protect citizens from discrimination, ensure accessibility to physical, informational, and service environments, promote their inclusion in the community, and organize an independent life.
However, effective implementation of programs requires joint efforts from all sectors, ensuring the inclusiveness of development programs and strategies. This process should be organized with the effective participation and leadership of persons with disabilities. I will continue to do everything possible to ensure that persons with disabilities, the National Assembly, the Government of Armenia, and all stakeholders work together for inclusive development,” Batoyan wrote.
