Armenia's Former Chief Prosecutor Arghvan Hovsepyan to Remain in Custody
The former Chief Prosecutor of Armenia and former head of the Investigative Committee, Arghvan Hovsepyan, will continue to remain in custody. The Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Tigran Simonyan, rejected the defense's appeal against the extension of Hovsepyan's detention for another two months. This information was provided to "Pastinfo" by lawyer Erik Aleksanyan.
It is noteworthy that on November 2, Judge Davit Arghamanyan of the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction had approved the investigator's request to extend Hovsepyan's detention for another two months.
The defense filed an appeal against the court's decision, which was assigned to Judge Tigran Simonyan of the Court of Appeal.
Recall that Arghvan Hovsepyan was arrested on September 7 in the morning. The investigative body has charged Hovsepyan in connection with a criminal case that has been under investigation for approximately 1.5 years and lodged a request to the court for his detention as a measure of constraint, which was approved by Judge Mkhitar Martirosyan.
Moreover, despite holding the highest leadership positions in law enforcement agencies for about 45 years, the investigative body has been unable to attribute any unlawful actions related to his official duties to Hovsepyan. He has been charged with allegedly engaging in illegal entrepreneurial activities and signs of money laundering.
In fact, when making the detention decision, the court also noted that there was no likelihood of Hovsepyan hiding from investigation, and cited his previous high-ranking positions as the basis for the detention, claiming that he could influence the investigation without providing any concrete examples.
