Why Internet Connection Has Slowed Down in Armenia Today

The internet connection in Armenia is slow due to a severed cable in the Russian city of Lipetsk. This information was disclosed to Sputnik Armenia by Grigor Saghiyan, vice president of the Internet Society of Armenia.

Internet users in Armenia have been complaining about the slow internet since early morning on November 26. Local providers claim that they have not recorded any disruptions, yet the quality of the internet remains poor.

“The internet reaches Armenia through two routes: one via Georgia from Varna and Germany, and the second from Novorossiysk. There has been a disruption in Lipetsk for 4 hours now, and all the traffic load has fallen onto Caucasus Online, the operator of the optical cable running from Georgia to Bulgaria across the Black Sea floor,” said the expert.

He explained that this disruption is the reason for the slow internet, but he noted that the cable will soon be repaired, allowing Armenia to reconnect to the internet through both routes once again.

It is worth mentioning that the Georgian company Caucasus Online is the operator of the optical cable running from Georgia to Bulgaria across the Black Sea floor. This represents the largest traffic channel of internet between Europe and the South Caucasus. The main shareholders of the company are Georgian investors, some of whom are registered in Europe. However, on August 8, the Georgian parliament sold 49% of the shares of the main internet traffic channel to Azerbaijani businessman Nasim Hasanov.
