Dialogue on Determining the Armenian-Azerbaijani Border Should be Based on Soviet Maps - Matviyenko
The Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matviyenko, addressed issues related to the delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border during a meeting in Saint Petersburg with the speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament, Sahiba Gafarova. This is reported by senatinform.ru.
“It has been exactly one year since the signing of the agreement to cease hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia demonstrated wisdom by signing the document to stop the bloodshed and move towards peaceful dialogue. However, the negotiation process is progressing slowly, which has led to the continued tension in the region,” said Matviyenko.
According to Matviyenko, the main issue today is border delimitation in a way that does not encourage anyone to resume military operations. “Russia has offered assistance considering that the Soviet maps are only kept with us at the Ministry of Defense. They are verified, accurate, and specify the exact borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Negotiations can confidently be conducted based on these maps, and both Armenia and Azerbaijan are in favor of this approach... There is understanding and agreement, but the process is moving slowly. As a result, certain tensions continue,” added the speaker of the upper house of the Russian parliament.
She emphasized that Russia is interested in establishing “peaceful and stable life in the South Caucasus” and will do everything necessary for this.
