Can People with Allergic Diseases be Vaccinated Against Coronavirus?

Allergic diseases are not contraindications for vaccination against the coronavirus. A contraindication for receiving the second dose of the vaccine may only arise from an acute allergic reaction that occurs after the first dose. This was stated by Armine Hakobyan, head of the Department of Allergology and Immunology at Yerevan State Medical University and director of the Allergology and Immunology Clinic at Heratsi Hospital, during a conversation with journalists, as reported by news.am.

According to her, allergic-immunologists are frequently approached by individuals claiming that they have certain allergic conditions and that their vaccination may be contraindicated. “We have protocols recommended by the WHO regarding contraindications and indications. An absolute contraindication is considered to be an allergic reaction that occurs after the first dose, which can be a contraindication for the subsequent dose. Here, we also have several exceptions. After conducting research, several global organizations have concluded that we can change the type of vaccine if an allergic reaction has developed from the previous vaccine,” the specialist noted.

She pointed out that some patients with allergic conditions are hesitant and avoid getting vaccinated due to a wide spread of false, distorted information. However, most patients with allergic diseases, even those with a history of severe drug allergies, are receiving vaccinations against coronavirus, and according to the specialist, there have been no recorded cases of acute, severe allergic manifestations after vaccination.
