What Assistance Does Yerevan Expect When Turning to Moscow? The Secretary of the Security Council Responds

The Armenian authorities expect that their strategic partner, Russia, will help resolve the issues related to Azerbaijan's recent actions. This was stated by the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, Armen Grigoryan, in an interview with Kommersant during the meeting of the CIS Security Council Secretaries taking place in Moscow.

He answered the question about what assistance Yerevan expects when addressing Moscow under the 1997 agreement. Grigoryan previously called on Russia to 'defend Armenia's territorial integrity.' 'A written request is being prepared,' he added.

'Currently, Azerbaijani armed forces are present in Armenia's sovereign territory. This is an act of aggression. Armenia and Russia agreed to assist each other on the principle of reciprocity in such cases in 1997. That is why we turned to Russia,' Grigoryan stated in the interview with Kommersant.

When asked for clarification about the specific type of assistance being discussed—whether diplomatic or military—Grigoryan responded, 'We prefer that this issue be resolved through diplomatic means. However, if it is impossible to resolve it diplomatically, then the issue must be resolved through military means.'

Previously, Grigoryan indicated that 'Yerevan can also request assistance from international partners.' In the conversation with the Russian publication, he assured that the priorities are indeed Russia and the CSTO. 'However, if no decision is made, we will also consider other options,' added the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia.
