Assassination Attempt on Iraqi Prime Minister via Drone

A missile struck the residence of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, who was not harmed, reports Agence France-Presse, citing security sources.

INA agency, referencing Iraqi security forces, stated that an "unsuccessful assassination attempt" was made against the Prime Minister using a drone. Al-Kadhimi was unharmed, and "security forces have taken necessary measures," according to a press statement from Iraqi security agencies cited by INA.

Arab News also confirms that the attack was carried out using a drone. Shafaq agency, citing a security services source, reported that three of the Prime Minister's security personnel were injured in the attack.

Heavy gunfire occurred during the attack in the Green Zone, which houses the US embassy and other diplomatic missions.

The situation in Iraq has escalated following the early parliamentary elections held on October 10, where initial data indicates that the influential Shiite political figure Moqtada al-Sadr's coalition has won. The coalition led by Hadi al-Amiri, known as "Al-Fatah," only holds 21 seats, a significant decrease from the 45 it had in the 2018 elections.

The coalition has filed a complaint demanding a review of the election results, and hundreds of its supporters are protesting in the Green Zone of the Iraqi capital, where government institutions and foreign diplomatic missions are located. The Higher Electoral Commission has not yet released the final election results.
