Armed Men Open Fire on Wedding Guests in Afghanistan Over Music
A group of armed individuals, presenting themselves as members of the Taliban, opened fire on wedding guests in Afghanistan, killing at least 2 and injuring 10, reports the Russian service of the BBC. Some media outlets report 13 fatalities.
The incident occurred in Nangarhar province during a ceremony where four couples were marrying simultaneously. Reports indicate that the couples had received prior permission from local Taliban leaders to play music in the area designated for women.
However, armed individuals stormed the evening hall, attempting to break the music equipment. After guests resisted, gunfire erupted.
According to a Taliban representative, two of the three assailants have been arrested following the incident. The Taliban also stated that the attackers acted in their name but had their own agendas.
The BBC recalls that during the previous Taliban regime from 1996 to 2001, music was officially banned in Afghanistan. The new authorities have yet to issue regulations regarding this matter.
