Çavuşoğlu Threatens to Resign from Erdoğan's Cabinet: Deutsche Welle

The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has threatened to resign after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan vowed to declare "persona non grata" for ten Western ambassadors who called for the release of detained philanthropist Osman Kavala.

According to Deutsche Welle, Çavuşoğlu, who was in South Korea when Erdoğan made the announcement last Saturday, urged him to postpone the decision until a cabinet meeting for a face-to-face conversation.

“If the ambassadors are declared persona non grata, I will have to leave the ministry,” Çavuşoğlu told Erdoğan. The president responded that there was nothing he could do.

Members of Erdoğan's ruling Justice and Development Party intervened, warning about the potential impact of the decision on diplomatic relations with countries including the US, Germany, France, and Canada. They are trying to find a compromise.

Erdoğan's threat has made headlines across global newspapers, and the Turkish lira fell to a historic low the day before. Later that same day, the US government issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries as outlined in Article 41 of the Vienna Convention.
