VIDEO: The Ministry of Emergency Situations Reminds What to Do During an Earthquake Following Yesterday's Tremors

As reported earlier, an earthquake was recorded in Armenia yesterday. The tremors were particularly felt in several communities of the Lori region.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations reminds what to do during an earthquake:

If you are in a building during an earthquake:

  1. If you are on the 1st or 2nd floors of a high-rise building, try to exit the building immediately and move to an open area.
  2. If you are on the 3rd floor or higher, do not exit the building, as the stairs and ladders will be crowded with panicked people, and elevators may turn off at any moment. Furthermore, stairs and ladders are usually the first to collapse.
  3. You may stand against the interior load-bearing walls or corners formed by them, near door openings in those walls, or near columns, keeping a chair, bag, or another suitable object above your head to protect yourself from falling debris.
  4. It is advisable to go under a bed or table if available.
  5. Stay away from windows and external walls as they are the first to collapse; avoid being injured by shattering objects.
  6. Be cautious of heavy objects, like cabinets or refrigerators, that can shift and topple.
  7. After the tremors have stopped, try to exit the building following a previously determined route.
  8. When exiting the building, be aware of falling debris, shattered glass, and downed power lines.
  9. You could suffocate due to dust created by collapses, so use a handkerchief, scarf, or a piece of clothing to cover your mouth while breathing.

If you are on the street during an earthquake:

  1. Move away from buildings, bridges, and power lines towards a safe area.
  2. Never enter a building to rescue those inside; this is very dangerous. Stay outside while looking for ways to help them.

If you are in a moving vehicle:

When a strong earthquake occurs, you may lose control of the steering wheel. The sensation is like it has left the wheels of the car. During this time, to ensure you do not hit another vehicle or get hit, slow down and move to the right side of the road. Stop in a relatively open area away from bridges, tall buildings, and power lines. Stay in your car, listen to the information provided via the vehicle's radio, and act accordingly. All vehicles' access to the disaster zone is strictly prohibited, except for specialized equipment, rescue teams, fire squads, and ambulances.

If you are in the subway:

While the subway is a safe shelter during a bombing, it can be just as dangerous during a strong earthquake. In this case:

  1. Do not panic and prioritize your safety.
  2. Hold on tightly to an object, such as the luggage rack or metal bars, to avoid falling.
  3. In the event of a 5 magnitude earthquake, power will go off, and the train will temporarily stop. Emergency lights will automatically turn on at the subway station.
  4. It is dangerous to head towards exits; this may cause panic. Follow the instructions given over the station's loudspeaker.

If you wake up from underground tremors:

  1. Never use electricity; do not light matches or use a lighter (the gas line may be damaged). Only use a pocket flashlight.
  2. Do not waste time getting dressed; quickly grab your bag with the essentials, and act according to the rules mentioned in the previous points.
