Iran's Foreign Minister Discusses Relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan
The new Iranian administration’s key principle is to develop relations with its neighbors, particularly with the northern neighbors, Azerbaijan and Armenia. This was stated by Iran’s Foreign Minister Hosein Amir-Abdollahian in an interview with Russia 24.
He noted that they cannot work with one neighbor against the other. “Our foreign policy is balanced. The Armenian Foreign Minister visited Tehran. It would be good if our Azerbaijani counterpart also had the opportunity to visit Iran. I, too, would visit Baku and Yerevan, if possible, as a gesture of friendly relations,” said Iran’s Foreign Minister. However, he added that the main concern for them in the South Caucasus is that certain foreign powers are trying to influence the region and change its borders, leading to closed borders.
“At the same time, we acknowledge the presence of terrorists who were involved during the Karabakh war. We say this without undermining the territorial integrity of our neighbors. During discussions with us, Azerbaijani officials promised that they would take measures to keep the region free of terrorists,” the Iranian Foreign Minister stated.
