Will Georgia Hand Over Saakashvili to Ukraine?

The Georgian authorities have ruled out the possibility of extraditing former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to Ukraine. This statement was made on Monday by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, as reported by the TASS agency.

“It is excluded. I am 100 percent sure that no one will transfer Saakashvili anywhere. First of all, no one is asking for it. He will be able to go to any country in at least six years,” Garibashvili stated in response to a question regarding the likelihood of extradition to Ukraine.

The head of the Georgian government emphasized that the former president will have to remain in prison for six years according to the verdict. It should be reminded that Mikheil Saakashvili was arrested on October 1 when he returned to Georgia to support the opposition in the local elections scheduled for October 2. The former president had been sentenced in absentia for assaulting a member of parliament and for organizing the murder of a banker. Additionally, he has faced charges in several other cases, including embezzlement of state funds, abuse of power, and illegally crossing the border of the country.
